The country today offers solemn homage to its first Prim e Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his 49th death anniversary.
The President-Pranab Mukherji along with Vice President-Hamid Ansari offered floral tribute at Shanti Van, his memorial on the banks of the river Yamuna. Priests recited hymns from the sacred scriptures for the departed leader.
The popular speech-Tryst with Destiny, of Mr. Nehru was played where he addressed the Constituent Assembly.
Nehru is called the founder of ‘Modern India’ and his tenure as a Prime Minister lasted from August 1947 till May 1964.
He was a great historian and an wonderful writer. On May 27th 1964, Pandit Nehru departed from the world at an age of 74 years. he was born on November14th 1889.
He was hugely popular among children and they affectionately called him ‘Chacha Nehru’.
