Read Farhan Akhtar’s open letter to his daughter
Farhan’s powerful message
Read Farhan Akhtar’s open letter to his daughter:- The Indian film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, playback singer, lyricist and television hostis one of our favourites, Farhan Akhtar in his open letter to his daughter has addressed the issue of rape openly, something that many fail to do even today.
Yes, we live in a society where rape is common and where every parent is sacred for their daughters. Yes, we have time and again blamed the girl for what happens to her. And it is sad.
This letter is not from a star in Bollywood, it is from a father to his daughter. In the letter Akhtar has made sure to acknowledge the “unequal” society we live in and how “The right to your body is yours and yours alone.”
The letter is not only moving, it is empowering and probably the best thing a 16- year- old would need. A poem in the letter reads- “What is this country that I live in?
That takes away her right to love
Brutalises her with an iron glove
Rapes her without fear
of there being justice for her tear…
…what do I tell my daughter?
That she’s growing up to be lamb for the slaughter
we’ve got to make a change
Reboot, reformat, rearrange,
and never give in
no matter how much our head may spin
Just keep asking the question
What is this country that I live in?”
He ends the letter by saying that- “I understand you little girl
Your rage, your surprise
Your confusion about the beast in human disguise
I stand with you, little girl, I stand with you.”
For a girl who is just trying to understand the world and who will soon be stepping out in the real world, this letter is the best thing that could ever happen.
