The holy month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and can last up to 29 or 30 days. The Islamic calendar is based on a lunar year of 12 complete lunar cycles, taking 354 or 355 days.

When a new moon is sighted, Ramadan begins, and then fasting starts with the next dawn. Additionally, fasting in Islam does not solely consist of refraining from food and drinks. Instead, one has to abstain from every kind of evil, selfish desire, and wrongdoings.

Ramadan desserts: Sheer Khurma

Sheer Khurma is a vermicelli pudding made with milk, dates, and lots of nuts. Eid festivities are never complete without Sheer Khurma. In the Persian language, ‘Sheer Means milk and ‘Khurma Means dates. We often address it with Meethi Sewayiyan. It is generally savoured first thing in the morning after the first namaz (prayer) of the day on Eid.
