NRI Day or Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated on 9th January every year. The observance of the day is an attempt to acknowledge the contribution of NRI community to the economic development of India.
The day is a tribute to the return of Gandhiji from South Africa to Bombay, way back on January 91915.
Since 2003, Pravasi Bhartiya Divas is observed as a regular annual event and is sponsored by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Indian Government and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
Every year, the day is celebrated between 7-9 January, as a grand event in Indian city. A forum is organized to discuss various issues of the NRI’s and Pravasi Bhartiya Awards are given.
In the year 2011, the day was held at New Delhi and President Pranab Mukherjee gave the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards.
The 11th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was held in 2013 at Koch and the President of Mauritius- Rajkeswur Purryag was present as the chief guest at the event.
The 12th NRI Divas will be held between 7-9 January 2013, at the Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The theme for 12th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas is ‘Engaging Diaspora: Connecting Across Generations’.
