Complaint against the Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani
Patiala house to pronounce an order today in Smriti Irani’s degree case:- The Patiala House Court will be announcing its order today on whether to summon the Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani on a complaint which is filed against her for allegedly giving false information regarding her academic qualifications.
This order had been put off on October 1 after the magistrate said that the order was not ready. The court had also reserved its order after hearing arguments advanced by the complainant, and going through all the reports submitted by the Election Commission and Delhi University regarding Smriti’s educational degrees.
A freelance writer, Ahmed Khan has filed a case in June 2015, against Irani where he has accused her of providing false information about her educational qualifications in the affidavits.
The court had been earlier told by an official appearing for the poll panel that the documents filed by Irani in regard of her educational qualification, while filing nominations, were not traceable. However, the information on this was available on its website, it mentioned.
DIFFERENT INFORMATION IN AFFIDAVITS
Khan had also alleged that Irani had knowingly furnished this misleading information about her qualifications in the affidavits which were filed before the EC and that a candidate, deliberately giving incorrect details, could be further punished under provisions of the IPC and under section 125A of the Representation of the People Act (RPA).
The complainant had claimed earlier in court that Irani in her affidavit for date April 2004 Lok Sabha polls, had said she had completed her BA in 1996 from DU (School of Correspondence), whereas in another affidavit of date July 11, 2011 to contest the Rajya Sabha election from Gujarat, she had said her highest educational qualification was B.Com Part-I from the School of Correspondence, DU.
The complaint further also claimed that in the affidavit filed for the nomination of April 16, 2014, Lok Sabha polls from the Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh, Irani had said she had completed her Bachelor of Commerce Part-I from School of Open Learning, DU.
