NDTV has decided to take government to SC over one- day ban imposed on channel
According to reports, NDTV has challenged the one- day ban imposed on the channel by the government. The ban was imposed on the channel after an inter- ministerial panel concluded that the channel had revealed strategically sensitive information during the Pathankot terrorist attacks.
Notably, the channel has now decided to move to Supreme Court in this context. The ban on the channel is supposed to be implemented from 00:01 hrs from November 9 to 00:01 hrs of November 10, 2016.
Notably, this is the first that any such order against a TV channel has been issued. The channel has condemned the ban and has demanded that the decision should be withdrawn immediately.
The statement which was issued to impose ban read “The reason behind the ban was reported that channel’s coverage of January 2, 2016, gave out some sensitive information to terrorist handlers.” In response to it, NDTV has said that their coverage was sober and there did not carry any information that had not been covered by other media houses.
The channel has also stated that taking the channel off Air is the violation of the freedom of media.
On the other hand, the government has said that freedom of press is important but nation comes first.
Though, the decision drew a sharp criticism from the opposition but the government repeated itself by saying press freedom is important but they cannot compromise with the national security.
The Channel has knocked the gates of Supreme Court and now the apex court will soon hear the case.
Now, what do you think is it a fair decision? You can write to us and tell your opinions. Should the channel face this ban?
