Lata Mangeshkar was born into a family of talents and performers. Her father had a theatre company and the Mangeshkar sisters grew up in awe of music. By pursuing singing, the sisters wanted to carry forward their father’s rich legacy.
They were being trained classically from their childhood. From a very young age, Mangeshkar could sing ‘Raag Puriya Dhanashree’ with full command. Her father discovered Lata’s real talent. “It so happened that once her father asked his shagird (disciple) to practice a raag while he finished some work. And the next minute, she was correcting him. When her father returned, he discovered a shagird in his own daughter.”
Reportedly, Lata’s father said to her mother, “We have a singer at home. We never knew it.”
Lata Mangeshka recorded her first song in 1942. She was only 13. She kick-started her career with a song titled ‘Naachu Yaa Gade’. It was for a Marathi movie but was later dropped from the album. She has served B-town for more than 7 decades, and that’s commendable. Lata Mangeshkar has regaled music listeners with her mellifluous voice. She has crushed every competition that came to her way. .
