Jean Gardner Batten was a New Zealand aviator who was born in Rotorua in 1909 on this date. The phenomenal woman is known as the best-known New Zealander of the 1930s as she made various solo flights across the world.
She is also known to have made the first-ever solo flight from England to New Zealand back in the year 1936.
She was also awarded the medal of the Fédération Aéronautique International in 1938 she which is the highest honour in aviation.
She became the first woman to receive this medal. She is often mentioned as the ‘Greta Garbo of the skies’. To celebrate her birthday Google has dedicated its doodle to this exceptional lady.
