Talking about how the concept came up, Praveen Sinha, MD and Founder of Jabong.com said, “There are two aspects to it. Jabong being online destination for fashion, we wanted to introduce everything related to fashion online and we had great concepts of fashion weeks but nothing was there for online platform so that was the first element that how to make fashion weeks go online. Now talking about the second aspect, I was quite inspired from talent hunt shows for music and dance which fetched talents across the nation and made these two areas one of the career choices, so I thought why not to do the same for fashion since it has many obstacles especially in middle class/ service class family. So we brought a platform for designers to show the best they have and if they are excellent with their work, they become celebrity designers too.”
Talking about the opportunity, few students of FDBI said, “For the present generation, online is the easiest way to have an access to products and in fact it is a boon for upcoming designers since not everyone can afford to make a physical presence in the field/have an outlet of their designs. Online also gives huge reach which is a plus point for us who are just beginning their career and our prices are quite affordable since we know what their taste is. Jabong is providing such a big platform to us and we are feeling really lucky and proud about it. We want to create what people like, especially youngsters.”
Kanika Goyal, one of the designers who showcased her work at Jabong Online Fashion week spoke about her collection and what she feels a fashion statement is, “I am showcasing all men lines. It’s all about comfort and light weight fabric and practical silhouette. My inspiration is blue sky and railway tracks since my theme is travelers of life. So, for all the men who want to shop cheek summer outfits they should hit jabong.com
Further speaking about the opportunity of collaborating with Jabong.com Kanika said, “It is an amazing platform especially for luxury designers as it helps in reaching out to masses as price point is low. This collection’s range is from 1000 to 10000 so it is an affordable fashion.” She also spoke about if she feels their outlets would suffer due to e-presence, “I don’t think because there are a lot of marketers who wants to feel the fabric before buying especially when it comes to luxury buying so if you talk about online shopping I don’t think there is any competition in this area.” Kanika’s style statement is being comfortable and cheek and be able to strike a balance between the both.
Jabong online fashion week is a step forward in re-defining the scope and meaning of fashion and fashion shows in India. The distinguished panel of judges- Nandini Bhalla, Varun Bahl, Colston Julian, Vidya Tikari, Lubna Adams and Noyanika Chatterjee carefully evaluated the entries showcasing online for the rest of the week. The jury members mad final selections based on the designers’ quality, innovation, marketability, originality and ability to take fashion to other level.
Other highlight of the event was launch of Dorothy Perkins’ Spring Summer collection 2015 whoch would be sold on Jabong exclusively. The collection of designers focused on different trends for this summer-spring season such as Tropical trends, Big garden blooms, Traveller of life, Coachella etc. Some of the designers who showcased their work are- Nitya Bajaj, Jaya Misra, Aesthetical Cubes, Jayati Goenka, Niharika Pandey, Aakriti Grover etc.
In conversation with us Aakriti Grover whose brand name is ‘Flirtatious’ spoke about her designs, “I design swim wear, beach wear and out there to make every feel sexy about themselves. I believe, in India we look for more customized stuff which is something that suits our body type so I design for Indian body types looking at the issues we find in our bodies. In my collection you will see a lot of cycadelic florals. Basically it is summer of 69 that’s done in contemporary way with flower power, so you would see a lot of floral prints and attractive colours and would be something really bright for this summers.”
Esha Gupta who became show stopper for Jaya Misra spoke about her style statements during winters, “I think fashion statement for summers is always related to colours, wearing light fabrics and making sure of having a lot of slippers in your wardrobe rather than heels. I think for me fashion is not following the trend but making a statement on your own by owning what you wear and being confident and comfortable about it.”
Aafter walking the ramp for Rahul Singh, Kay Kay Menon said that instead of his debut on the platform as a model, nothing makes him feel uncomfortable since he believes in just going there and being what you are. As the event progressed, many new talents showcased their work and also, actresses like Kalki Koechlin and Neha Dhupia became the show stopper.
