The question yesterday was, who will be joining Costa Rica from Group D, to advance in the top 16, and Uruguay is the answer. Yes in case, you were wondering how come Italy which includes greats like Pirlo and Buffon on their side has been shown the door. The match at Estádio das Dunas, Natal surely answered that too.
With the Azzuri needing only a draw to advance to the second stage of the carnival, they faltered. Even though they dominated the first half, the Italian attack lacked the accuracy. All in all, in the first half both the teams were trying not to concede a goal instead of scoring one. Italy is well known for its defence, while Uruguay was too afraid to concede as if they did, it would have meant an elimination from the tournament. The strikers of both the teams were below par and the keepers of both the teams were standing idle for most of the time. Suarez was trying his best to score, but was not getting the help required to take a clean strike at the goal. On the other side, Balotelli was busy with his antics and it seemed like he was a stage actor. Falling down, crying out for help and in the process interrupting the game on numerous occasions.

In the second half the deadlock continued, but things changed in the 59th minute when Marchisio was awarded a red card for a ruthless tackle stomping on an Uruguyan player’s knee. His foot was at the wrong place at the wrong time while the referee was at the right place to give the decision. Italy was devastated and it showed on their faces when they were begging the referee to revert his decision, but in vain. Now, the South Americans felt they could really break through the wall and after a few substitutions they were proved right. They moved forward with confidence taking shots at the goal, testing Buffon. La Celeste won a corner in the 81st minute and their captain Godin charged at the ball, with his back to the goal he tried to head the ball but instead his shoulder made the contact but it was enough to beat the keeper as the Italians stood stunned, the men in light blue celebrated. This was it, this is what they had been playing for.

An incident though caught the eye of many when Luiz Suarez tried to bite an Italian defender as he was blocking his run, the pictures were shown on the ground and the Italian player was showing the marks to the referee but as he had not seen it, the referee couldn’t make a decision. Now, this incident might be reviewed by the authorities and it should be as this kind of behavior is not acceptable. It grinds the spirit of the game.
