One of India’s most celebrated Film personalities Raj Kapoor was born on Dec. 14, 1924 in Peshawar (now in Pakistan).
His father, Prithvi Raj Kapoor was a renowned theatre and film actor, and this is the environment young Raj grew up in.
Raj Kapoor came into his own in the late 1940s as an actor, having delivered memorable performances in films like Shri 420, Awaara, Aag, Andaz, Barsaat and many more.
Taking to directing, he gave films like ‘Mera Naam Joker’ in 1970, followed by the hugely succesful cult romance ‘Bobby’ in 1973. He later give further hits like ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’, ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ and other films, which again were very popular, raking up some societal ills and controversies along the way.
Winning many National Awards, Filmfare Awards, a Palme d’Or at Cannes, he received the Padma Bhushan in 1971 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1987.
Living his life king size, Raj Kapoor is known for his rich performances, his extravagant film sets, and his many off-screen passionate romances, notable among which was with actress Nargis, who later married actor Sunil Dutt.
He passed away in 1988, leaving behind a rich cinmatic legacy, and heirs like Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, and their children Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Ranbir Kapoor to not only carry on his legacy.
