India beats the host by 35 runs in the opening match
The Indian women’s cricket team defeated the hosts of ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2017, England by 35 runs in the opening match of the tournament. Leaded by Captain Mithaliraj, the team performed exceptionally magnificent and defeated England. Smriti Mandhana was the highest scorer and made 90 runs after facing 72 balls. Hitting 11 fours and 2 sixes, she was able to run the scorecard. Deepti Sharma took 3 wickets giving 47 runs. The three fifties by Smriti Madhana, Punam Raut(86), and skipper Mithaliraj Sharma(71) helped India to post 281 on the scoreboard. Moreover, skipper Mitaliraj Sharma made a world record of scoring 7 consecutive fifties.
England won the toss and elected to field first. Indian openers Punam Raut and Smriti Madhana gave a powerful start and both scored half-centuries. On the 5th ball of 26th over, Smrithi Madhana was caught on 90 by Danielle Wyatt on Danielle Hazell’s ball. Their were 144 runs on the scoreboard at the point. Then Punam Raut and skipper Mithali had a great partnership of 78 runs when Punam Raut was caught in the 42nd over by Danielle Hazell on Heather Knight’s bowl. In the last over, on the last ball Captain Mithaliraj was also caught out.
Harmanpreet Kaur also gave a contribution of 24 runs and supported the captian in the death overs.
While bowling, Deepti Sharma took the highest 3 wickets giving 47 runs in 8.3 overs. Shikha Pandey and Punam took 2 and 1 wickets respectively.
England’s batting was scattered over the match. There was poor running between the wickets which benefitted the Indians and their were a total of 5 run-outs in the second innings. Skipper Heather Knight(46) and Francis Wilson(81) were the only to score something well but both were runout. Except sarah Taylor(22), Katherine Brunt(24) Knight, and Wilson not even a single player was able to make more than 15 runs. After successive knockdown of wickets the English team was only able to put 246 in 47.3 overs and were all out.
Before this, even the bowlers could not do much in front of the Indian players. They were hunting for wickets in the whole innings of the Indian batting but could not make it to the mark. Heather Knight and Danielle Hazell took 2 and 1 wickets respectively and became the only wicket takers grom England.
