How does music impact our emotions?
Music and its impact
How does music impact our emotions?:- Music is an important component in everyone’s life. It has been present since time immemorial and has influenced the psychology of humans in various ways, a lot of which is still under research.
Music has been widely linked to our memory, performance on certain tasks, intelligence, emotions and a lot more. It has largely been linked to emotions as research in cognition and neuroscience have validated that the main reason to listen music is pleasure and emotions.
Though music has always been correlated to positive emotions, a lot of research findings have suggested otherwise also. Depending on the tempo, lyrics, melody etc., music can induce both positive and negative emotions. This is done because music activates those areas in the brain which are responsible for emotions.
Music and emotions
Melodies that are played at a slow tempo tend to evoke emotions with low energy such as sadness, whereas melodies that are played at a fast tempo tend to evoke emotions with high energy, such as anger or joy.
A research has also shown that “people can successfully improve their moods and boost their overall happiness in just two weeks, simply by listening to specific mood-boosting music.” One of the major sources of music is media. Channels like MTV, VH1, V etc, have not only made music more accessible, but it has promoted the growth of revolution in music.
These channels have exposed the teenagers to various kind of violent music that have been linked with increase in aggression. Aggressive lyrics have often been linked to hostile actions performed by people.
The relation between music and emotions is not one sided. Though music does impact our emotions, many people also listen to music to feel in a certain way. Research has suggested that “people listen to music to reach certain goals in their lives.”
