World Animal Welfare Day – A reminder in which animals enhance our lives

October 4 is a significant day as it also marks the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.


In order to create awareness against the sufferings of animals and to build a sense of concern, World Animal Welfare Day is celebrated across the globe.

It was first celebrated in 1931. Since then 4th October is celebrated as World Animal Welfare Day in order to acknowledge the ‘animal life in all its forms.’

In 1931, at a convention held at Florence, Italy, ‘the predicament faced by endangered species’ was gravely thought. Slowly, the idea grew in scope and later on included all forms of animal life.’

The novel part of this day is that it is not confined to any specific class, caste, religion, nationality, creed, ideology or political belief. This important day is for all those who firmly and ardently believe and have concern for the innocent animlas and their sufferings. Without the wonderful creatures our world would be a lifeless and placid place to live.

We need animals for a harmonious ecological and natural balance.

‘Animal welfare campaigns are launched on World Animal Day. Rescue shelters for the animals are opened in different parts of the world. Fundraising events are also organized. Schools and different group of the wildlife arranges information displays. Voluntary organizations come forward to sponsor shelter to the animals. World Animal Welfare day is a wonderful reminder of different ways in which animals enhance our lives.’
