Conspiracy behind S6 Coach: High Court orders for Compensation
In 2002, Godhra (Gujarat) around 59 innocent people were burnt to death along with 48 non fatal injuries by the mob of around 1000-2000 people. Incident was based on religious issue. Notably, victims were returning from a religious ceremony at `Babri masjid .
Notably, the Gujarat High court has commuted the death sentence of 11 convicts involved in Godhra incident case. The Court has also ordered the state government to pay a compensation of rupees 10lakh to the families within the period of 6 weeks.
Both the justices of the case Justices AS Dave and Justice GR Udhwani observed that the fault was also with the state government, who at that time failed to maintain the law and order.
“We have relied basically on the victims and the families who had lost their family members in this incident, railway employees, forensic reports, we also kept the question of compensation for the families which were not considered by the trial court,” Justce AS Dave stated.
Incident was held in ‘Sabarmati Express S6 coach’ in which mostly ‘ Kar Sevaks’ were traveling and they all were returning from Ayodhya.

In SIT court around 31 people convicted regarding this case and acquitted 63 in the case. While 11 people were sentenced to death and 20 were given lifetime imprisonment.
Under IPC sections, all the 31 people were convicted regarding that planned murder accident and criminal conspiracy. People who are acquitted under the prime accused are- Mohammad Hussain Kalota, Mohammad Ansari, Maulana Umarji, the then president of Goadhra Municipality and Nanumiya Chaudhary of Gangapur, U.P.
The Nanavati Comission which was appointed by the Gujarat government to investigate the incident and had concluded that the fire in the S-6 coach was not an accident, but it was set ablaze.
