Manohar Parrikar visits Uri
Almost a month and a half after militants struck at an Army camp in Uri which killed 17 soldiers, with two more soldiers succumbing later, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar visited the attack site on Wednesday and asked the Indian soldiers to remain vigilant and give a befitting replay to any misadventure from across the Line of Control (LoC).
During the Visit
The Defence Minister Parrikar and Army chief General Dalbir Singh arrived in Srinagar on the Wednesday afternoon and soon left for Uri, where they interacted with the army soldiers and reviewed the current situation, especially on the LoC, where ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces has been persistent of late.
Earlier, Parrikar had visited Srinagar on 18 September, a day after the attack on Uri base camp. This visit of the Defence Minister’s is first to the Valley after Army’s surgical strikes along the LoC on September 29.
In Uri, Parrikar was chiefly briefed by formation commanders about the situation on the LoC, as also about infiltration and cross-border firing, a defence ministry spokesperson stated.
“The defence minister, along with senior Army officers, visited the frontier area of Uri, where they were primarily briefed by the local commanders about the current situation on the LoC. The minister also interacted with the troops deployed in the forward areas,” the spokesperson added.
Remembering the soldiers
As per the spokesperson, Parrikar complimented the army soldiers for their valour and fortitude, and said that they were the country’s pride. “He imposed upon the soldiers to remain in a very high state of alert to give a befitting response to any misadventure from across the border,” the spokesperson said.
Parrikar also chaired a high-level meeting at 15 Corps headquarters, where he was briefed about the latest internal security situation and all security measures initiated by the Indian Army and other security agencies along the Line of Control as well as the hinterland.
The minister is likely to attend another function in Budgam district on Thursday. Notably in the function he will unveil the statue of Major Somnath Sharma
