England get their first points

Game 14 of the ICC Cricket World Cup played at Hagley Oval saw England get their first points. They beat their rivals Scotland by 119 runs. It was not exactly a performance which would instill fear into the hearts of leading contenders, nevertheless, England would be relieved to get off the mark and would look to carry the momentum forward in the next game against Sri Lanka.

Scotland won the toss and elected to field.

England went off to a dreamy start. The opening pair of Ian Bell and Moeen Ali put up a partnership of 173 upfront. They lost their way in the middle overs by losing quite a few wickets for not many runs but, Morgan and Butler played some good shots to get England over 300. They finished their innings at 308/8.

Scotland lost wickets at regular intervals during the run chase. Kyle Coetzer played a terrific knock but there was no one to support him as wickets kept falling at the other end. Coetzer was out for 71 and with that Scotland’s hope of winning the match also died down. They were bowled out for 184 runs.

Moeen Ali was awarded the Man of the Match was his all round effort. He scored a century and was brilliant with the ball as well. He bowled 10 overs and took 2 wickets.

Scotland have been good in patches in this World Cup so far. They troubled New Zealand in their previous match but the lack of international exposure clearly shows.

No one can doubt their capabilities as they have proved themselves to be a good side right from the warm up games. They have 4 more games to go in this group stage and I won’t be surprised if they manage to upset one of the big teams.
