Diluted Honey May Cure Urine Infections
Diluted Honey May Cure Urine Infections:- UK researchers, in their recent study claims water and honey as a useful weapon to cure urine infections. Hospital patients who have a catheter fitted, either to drain the urine stuck in the bladder or to monitor the urine output might feel less pain with the diluted honey solution.
The diluted honey might be useful for flushing urinary catheters in order to keep them clean while they remain stuck in the bladder. A scientist at the University of Southampton shows that the diluted honey proves to stop the bacteria from forming sticky, hard-to-remove layers or surfaces like plastic.
The two types of urine and bladder infection are – E. coli and Proteus mirabilis. However, dilution of honey solution at a low of about 3.3 percent cleared the appearance of bacteria from clustering together. These layers are known as “Biofilm Formation” on plastic devices like urinary catheters.
Dating back, honey was used as a natural antiseptic to treat wounds, burns etc. Whereas nowadays companies have introduced a new selling range of ‘Medical Grade’ honey products with regulatory standards.
Where does the study come from?
The study was done on Manuka honey that comes from Australia and New Zealand. Manuka honey is said to be made by the bees that are feeding on the nectar of Manuka tree. Lead researcher, Bashir Lawleed, used Manuka honey because it is dark-coloured and is known to have bacterial fighting properties.
Professor Dame Nicky Cullum, an expert of wound care says, this work from Southampton is at a very early stage so we should not get too excited. But it is an interesting avenue that is worth pursuing. To this, she also added, obviously, we’d need more studies to check that it wouldn’t irritate the bladder or cause any other problems. People like things that are natural but they are not always more effective.
The theory is published in the Journal of Clinical Pathology.
