Justice Gorla Rohini, on 21st April 2014 was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. The Delhi High Court already has nine woman judges but Gorla Rohini, would be the first woman Chief Justice of Delhi in the history of the Court.
She was administered the oath of office by Lieutenant Governor, Najeeb Jung at Raj Nivas. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by senior members of the judiciary, the chief secretary and other senior officers of the Delhi Government.
She replaced Justice N V Ramana, who had vacated the position in February following his elevation to the Supreme Court. Besides, she will be the tenth woman Judge of the Delhi High Court, which has strength of forty. She will have tenure of four years.
Gorla Rohini, 59 is a former judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. She hails from Vishakhapatnam and studied at the College of Law, Andhra University, securing a first class.
During her two-decade long career, Justice Rohini was associated with several public issues as well as labour and service matters. She also worked as a reporter of Andhra Pradesh Law Journal, later going on to become its executive editor in 1985.
She practised as a lawyer after enrolling with the bar in 1980. Fifteen years later, she was appointed government advocate in the high court. She became additional judge in 2001 and was made a permanent judge in 2002.
