Meeting called on Acid Sale Regulation in Delhi
Meeting called on Acid Sale Regulation in Delhi:- Swati Maliwal, chairperson, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has called for Delhi’s Districts Magistrates (DMs) meeting in the National Capital Territory (NCT) for implementation of Supreme Court’s order on the acid sale regulation and recommendations of the commission in this regard.
Highlights from the meeting
“The DCW Chairperson wants to hold a meeting with all District Magistrates/ Deputy Commissioners of Delhi, a total of eleven, along with one Sub-Divisional Magistrate each from every district to discuss the implementation of the orders passed by the Supreme Court regarding acid sale and also to discuss the recommendations of DCW to regulate this sale in Delhi,” said PA to DCW Chairperson, Rajesh Kumar.
“The meeting will take place on November 3 at around 4 p.m. in the DCW Conference Room at Vikas Bhawan, New Delhi,” he added.
The meeting has been called in the wake of unregulated acid sale, which is a major cause for increasing acid attacks against women in India.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 2014 data, Delhi was recorded with 20 incidents of acid attacks as the third highest state after the West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
What all happened earlier?
The apex court on July 18, 2013 had passed an order in the case of Laxmi vs Union of India that placed huge restrictions on the acid sale and mandating the maintenance of acid buyers among other people.
In regard of this order, the DCW had directed all DMs in Delhi to gather information regarding acid sales in their respective jurisdictions, including details of all retailers, actions adopted to regulate acid sales, action taken in respect to the apex court order as well as details of the fine which was collected upon violations for the past two years.
“Based on this data which was submitted to the DCW by district magistrates, we found that major steps need to be taken to regulate the acid sale in Delhi. In this regard the Commission has also made recommendations to the Delhi Government regarding the control on acid sales in Delhi. The Commission has called a meeting of all DMs in this regard to hold consultations for devising stringent regulation of acid sale in Delhi,” stated in a statement issued by the commission.
