‘The word Carnival (Carnival in Portuguese) is derived from a Latin word meaning ‘to take away meat’ and is an expression of the 40-day period of fasting of Lent, during which abstinence from meat is a rule.’
The carnival is unique and special for Goa and the Portugeses who ruled the state of Goa for five hundred years are credited to introduce it.
Goa carnival is organized for three days and nights in February. It is the time when King Momo takes over everything else and the streets become colorful and alive with music.
The carnival refers to an occasion of celebration full of merrymaking-feasting-drinking orgy prior to the austere 40 days of Lent. Big parades are held with bands and dances all night on the streets of the city.
People dress up in beautiful dresses and even masquerades during the carnival celebration.
Being a festival of music, dance and color, Goa Carnival is one of the most awaited events. Both young and old find tremendous entertainment at the carnival.
