Bangladesh look solid entering quarters
Bangladesh created history a few days back by entering into the quarter finals of the cricket world cup for the first time. They defeated England to knock them out of the World Cup. They are a good team and are known to cause upsets in the World Cup. Back in 2007, they knocked India, the defending champions, out of the world cup in group stage.
They faced New Zealand in their last match of the group stage. Even though New Zealand hasn’t lost a single match and are one of the favorites to win this cup, yet they gave them a good fight and look a confident team getting into the quarters.
Mahmudullah jubilant after scoring a century Source
The match was played at Hamilton where New Zealand won the toss and elected to field. Bangladesh went off to a shaky start. They couldn’t score at a good rate in the first 10 overs and also lost a couple of wickets. They fought back in the middle overs with Mahmudullah and Sarkar stitching a useful partnership. Sarkar was dismissed by Vettori and Shakib and Rahim didn’t trouble New Zealand much. But, Rahman came in and played a cameo scoring 40 of just 23 balls while Mahmudullah completed his century, both of them helping Bangladesh to put 288 on the board.
Taylor played a composed innings Source
Chasing above 270 is never easy for any team, no matter who the opposition are and coming after a win against England, Bangladesh were in no mood to fizzle out. They struck early, getting both McCullum and Kane out cheaply who had scored bulk of the runs for New Zealand. But, New Zealand showed why they are a complete team, with Guptill and Taylor scoring runs who hadn’t performed until now. Guptill kept the run rate ticking scoring at a good rate while Taylor took time to build his innings. Guptill got out after completing his century. New Zealand lost 3 quick wickets in the last 10 overs and needed 20 runs of 16 balls with 3 wickets remaining and tail enders at the crease. But, Vettori and Southee held their nerve taking New Zealand past Bangladesh.
Martin Guptill was awarded the Man of the Match for this match winning century.
