Ahmed Patel’s victory in Rajya Sabha has rejuvenated spirit of Congress
Congress leader Ahmed Patel won the Rajya Sabha Gujarat election on Wednesday. After winning the elections he said, “I am happy and I would like to thank Congress MLAs. We will fight assembly elections with same enthusiasm and resolve.” Notably, the hard –fought victory of Congress heavyweight Ahmed Patel has rejuvenated Congress Spirit for the upcoming elections.
Interestingly, Congress had 57 MlAs till a fortnight ago but it could manage votes of just 43 of them in Tuesday’s polling, thanks to a spate of resignations and cross –voting. However, the fact is that the grand old party has managed to keep its flock loyal.
Notably, the counting of votes was delayed by over six hours because the congress petitioned the Election Commission that two rebel legislators should be disqualified.
Finally, the counting began around midnight, but was held up again for some time as the BJP raised some objections. The results were declared close to 2 am which brought gala and celebration time for the Congress Party.
BJP President Amit Shah and Smriti Irani were sure about their victory in the polls but this time Congress claimed the throne.
Rebel MLA and former Chief Minister Shankersin Vagehla, six of loyalist and Sananad legislator for Kameshi Patel – among the 42 MLAs taken to Bengaluru had cross voted. But this did not help BJP.
After his exit, the congress party is calling itself a “United House”. They said that the tactics of BJP will not break their unity.
