Origin and History of Asian Games: From Far Eastern Championship to Asian Games


Asian games are continental multi-sports event held in every 4 years in all Asian countries. Asian Games 2018 are at its peak. Today, we will talk about the origin and history of Asian Games. Initially, The Asian Games were regulated by the Asian Games Federation (AGF).  In the year 1982, it was taken over by Olympic Council of India (OCA) after the breakup of Asian Games Federation.

The very first edition of Asian games was held in March 1951 in New Delhi. Japan was barred from the 1948 Olympics in London after the Second World War. Thereafter, China was also excluded from the founding meeting of the Asian Games Federation in 1949 but the country was allowed to participate in the inaugural Asian games. Similarly, South Korea didn’t participate due to the Korean War which lasts till 1953. The Games were officially inaugurated by Indian President Rajendra Prasad at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium.  A sum of 489 athletes from 11 National Olympic Committees competed in 12 sports.

Origin

The Asian games are originated from the Far Eastern Championship Games. After the Second World War Asian countries become independent, and Guru Dutt Sondhi, a member of the Indian International Olympic Committee proposed the idea of Asian games. He said there should be a sports event  where all Asian countries could take place.  Nine nations have hosted the Asian Games so far and 46 nations have participated in the games.

Conclusion

The 2018 Asian games taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia is the 18th edition of Asian games. For the first time, Asian games are being co-hosted by two cities- Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, and  Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra province. Also, for the first time, Sports and canoe polo will be contested as demonstration sports to promote the sport further and finally in 2022 Sports is expected to be a medal event.
